For many years I was the editor of the church magazine of the group of parishes in my native Norfolk where I worshipped and served as a Reader (a lay minister in the church of England). Inevitably, this involved writing some part of the content, and one of the clergy in the group suggested that I might be called to a writing ministry. At the time I did nothing about it, but a few years later, after moving to Hertfordshire, I was invited to write a piece for a church magazine. I accepted, and The Gospel Around Us was born.
That was in 1999. Since then over 170 articles have been written. Some have been published in a variety of church magazines, about half of them were collected in a book that I published privately in 2008, and most of them have appeared online in a blog published on another website. Always, the general theme has been the same, to link everyday life to our Faith. Now this venture has taken on a new identity with its own site.
Psalm 139 says, “Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. … If I say, ‘surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,’ even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.”
God is everywhere, and we can’t escape from His presence, however much we try. And the wonderful truth is that He delights in talking to us through everything around us, if only we would listen. St Paul asked, “How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?” It is only by seeing and hearing that we can learn more about God, and only by looking and listening that we can see and hear, and recognise the many blessings He has for each of us.
Welcome. I hope my posts will help you reflect upon the Gospel that is all around us!
